Meet Captain Kallista Varyl, a North Magic user in the military who can call down lightning and her devoted bodyguard, Torchay. On a promise to the Goddess, their world is turned upside down and inside out. The "godstruck" must gather to make the magic whole and defeat the demons who have gotten a solid hold on parts of the world. If the "godstruck" can find the way to not kill one another first. They must not only hunt the demons inhabiting the world, but themselves. If they fail, the magic cannot bind into the force needed to defeat the darkness.
Gail has not only written about a world filled with magic, she creates magic, weaving an ancient city set in its ways, filled with amazing people facing chaos who must face greater turmoil. She places you firmly in this world early on, and weaves a dance that will have you spinning along with her tune all the way through.
The trilogy reflects the most ancient combat between the dark and the light, good versus evil, belief, denial and love. However, these things are not remote. The story makes your mind tick and call up the things happening now, in this world. It's quite like stepping into a house of mirrors. There is a tethering to the realities and tribulations of this world while moving with unknowing inquisitiveness and surprise through the world Gail has created in her trilogy. Interestingly, she manages to convey hope, love, trust, and the ability of the human being to adapt while taking us on an adventurous, ribal ride that will leave the reader feeling good and begging for more.
Trust me, I never say nice things about a book if I didn't like it, not even for a friend. This friend made me very glad I read her books. I could not, in all honesty, put it down and read it in one sitting, sweating what was happening to who and where they were all going. The thing that had me worried was how they were going to get there without killing each other! There are rollicking good times and amazing encounters. Yes, there is sex, and it is a wonderous melding of human beings and power that will leave your knees shaking.
